What To Do If You Dont Want to Be A Manager, But Want More Money
What To Do If You Dont Want to Be A Manager, But Want More MoneyWhat To Do If You Dont Want to Be A Manager, But Want More Money To borrow (and slightly adapt) a quote from Spider-Man With a great salary comes great responsibility. If you want to continually increase your salary, youll often reach a point where youre leid just responsible for yourself - youre overseeing a team as well. However, there are always exceptions to that rule. If youre not cut out to be a manager , boosting your pay isnt impossible - you just need to be strategic about it. We turned to a couple of salary and career experts to get the lowdown on how to make the big bucks without becoming a manager. It is possible to turn down a promotion into management while still boosting your salary - more on that later - but its definitely easier to be clear about it from the get-go. When youre looking for jobs, be deliberate about the roles/companies you apply for. Ensure they are ones which could be nefit from your deep subject matter expertise and/or individual contributions. Dont take a job where you know you cant advance unless you manage others, otherwise you may find yourself disappointed and frustrated, says Foram Soni Sheth , Co-Founder and Career Coach at Ama la Vida .The key to finding out whether or not youll be expected to move into management eventually is during the interview process, says Josh Doody , author of Fearless Salary Negotiation . A good way to find this out is to ask the right questions in your interview when you get the chance. One of the questions I really like is What would a long-term career look like at this company? This accomplishes two things 1. It helps you understand whether theyre expecting you to manage people any time soon, and 2. It will help you stand out as a studious candidate whos thinking about long-term geschftsleben results. Win-winIf it becomes clear that youll be expected to move into management eventually, it may not be the right role. If that doesnt sound like the case, though, and they still mention the vermgen for bonuses , raises , and promotions , that may be more up your alley - especially if you can negotiate your way to a higher salary .After you accept a role like that, though, its important to keep the lines of communication open so that you dont accidentally end up on the fast track to a management role.Once youre working at the company, I recommend talking about your career path with your manager at least once a quarter so that you can understand whats expected as you grow, but also so the I prefer not to be a manager conversation comes up naturally before they try to slot you into a manager role, Doody says. That way, youre well ahead of that conversation and performance review or promotion conversations wont have any surprises for you or your manager.Sheth agrees - The last thing you want is for your boss to work hard to promote you to a manager role and find out at the last minu te that you dont want it, she shares. Be upfront and honest with your boss and communicate what you want out of your job. Be sure to have frequent communication with your boss about your needs and develop a plan to work towards your goals.Hopefully, if youve been clear and consistent with your expectations, you wont encounter a surprise promotion to a managerial position. In the case that it does happen, though, dont worry - you do not have to take it and you should definitely say something to your manager, Doody says. You might be thinking Could this hurt my standing at work? The truth is that it could , depending on your company culture and manager, Doody says, but accepting a managerial role and phoning it in will definitely hurt your standing at work. Accepting a role and then doing a poor job in that role could hurt your future potential at your company and affect your reputation , so you want to avoid that. The key is to turn down the offer in a tasteful, gracious manner. B e humble thank them for the opportunity. Appreciate them and let them know how much it means to you that theyre rewarding you, Sheth recommends. After youve expressed your gratitude, explain to them what your time and skills would be best suited for and how that will benefit the organization and will also help you achieve your goals. Offer an alternative path and explain the impact that youll have. This will show them that youre invested.Doody recommends saying something like I really appreciate you offering me this promotion , and it means a lot to me. I prefer to keep focusing on helping the company reach its goals as an individual contributor, and I would love to talk about more ways I can add value and improve our team in that capacity.Once youve made it clear that youre not interested in a promotion to a managerial position, it is possible to either pivot that into a promotion with non-managerial responsibilities or just a raise. But Doody points out that raises and promotions arent always the same thing. Promotions are an acknowledgment that youre already doing the type of work associated with a different, more advanced job. Raises are an acknowledgment that youre adding unanticipated, additional business value since the last time your salary was set, he says. If you believe you are indeed adding that unanticipated, additional business value though, it might be appropriate to carefully build a strong case and ask for a raise , he says.Your boss and the leaders of the company care about having happy and productive employees that will give back to the organization. So, continue to demonstrate your worth and be proactive about what your goal is and how its going to help not only you but the organization, Sheth recommends. From there, all you have to do is state the case for why you deserve to be earning more .Clearly explain what youre doing and the impact youre having on the organization and its bottom line. Your work will speak for itself and the rais e will be a no-brainer, Sheth says.

Outside-The Box Ways to Improve Company Culture
Outside-The Box Ways to Improve Company CultureCompanies are rapidly learning the value of a good company culture. After all, attractive cultures also attract good candidates. Smart companies are constantly realizing the modern worker is looking for a bit more than the traditional workplace benefits. Companies can then use ansicht perks to entice great candidates in the video interview or at any time throughout the hiring process. To reel in the best employees, these companies are starting to look at less traditional ways to boost employee morale. Happier employees are also more productive employees, which is why companies are willing to step outside-the-box when it comes to improving company culture. Here are some ways companies are looking outside the traditional perks to attract and keep great employeesUnlimited Vacation TimeDoes your superstar employee want to go backpacking through Europe for a month? More companies are getting on board with the idea by embracing unlimited vacatio ns. Companies from Netflix to Evernote have already jumped on the unlimited vacation bandwagon. These companies claim the idea doesnt cause a loss in productivity, but instead encourages workers to make better use of their time. By giving employees free reign to take off as much as they want, these companies are giving workers responsibility and trust. This will let you know which employees are likely to abuse this trust and which will use it for good. Best of all, employees will come back from vacations relaxed, recharged and ready to continue innovating.Get Caught NappingIn an episode of the sitcom Seinfeld, George found the perfect place to nap under his desk. Today, some workers dont have to find a deserted cubbyhole in the office when they need to rest. Instead, companies are providing nap rooms and sleep pods when employees need some brief shut eye. This idea might seem wacky to some, and even counterintuitive when it comes to increasing productivity. These companies realize, however, they are creating a culture in which employees are allowed to recharge their batteries. After a quick nap employees can better focus on the task at hand- no hiding required. Get Fido WorkingIf you feel schwimmbad about leaving your four-legged companion at home when you set out for the day, some companies are making it easier to spend quality time with your pet. More companies are allowing employees to bring their furry friends into the office. While this might not work for all companies, especially if some employees are allergic, the benefits of having pets around can really boost morale for pet owning workers. Allowing workers to bring their pets into the office creates a friendly company culture for pet owners and allows them to spend more hours at work without the guilt of leaving Fido at home.Encourage FunWhile its important to listen to the concerns and innovative ideas of your employees, sometimes you need to know when to cut loose. Hard working employees can only bu rn the candle at both ends for so long before they will eventually burn out. You want to avoid this burnout at all costs, because you dont want to lose valuable talent. Instead, make fun an important part of your company culture. Whether its pool tables, basketball courts or a free snack bar, many companies know that if their employees have somewhere to blow off steam in the office, theyll return more productive.Developing a great company culture is truly important for companies looking to find and keep the best talent. In the hustle to find the very best workers, your company might want to think outside-the-box when it comes to developing a culture where employees look forward to work each day. These perks can then be used to brand your company as a great place to work for prospective candidates, in the video interview or just through word-of-mouth. Whether its naps, furry friends or office fun make sure your employee morale stays sunny to keep workers motivated and turning in thei r best work. What are some outside-the-box ideas you have for improving company culture? Not how little you sleep or how long you work.Inefficiency is not something to brag about.Dude, I stayed up all night writing a blog post. I could barely keep my eyes open. HustleThats absurd. Try this Dude, I got a good nights sleep and wrote a blog post in one hour this morning. EfficientHow to Go zum besten von Dont measure how hard you work. Measure how much you get done.Hustle is based on fear. Pros trust themselves. Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt. ? William Shakespeare, Measure for MeasureAt its core, hustle is an inability to say No. And one of the biggest causes of indecisiveness is self-doubt.People who cant say No are fearful. They dont trust themselves to make the right decisions. So they always say Yes.They think, If I do absolutely everything possible and still fail, it wont be my fault. But success doesnt usually hinge on one decision. It comes from making mostly good decisions over time. And heres the thing. You are going to fail. Absolutely every successful person does. Because people who keep failing (and learning) eventually succeed. How to Go Pro Trust yourself to make good decisions and to learn from the bad ones. Be prepared to forgive yourself for the mistakes you are certain to make.Hustle is not habit forming.Successful people are simply those with successful habits. - Brian TracyIt was a sweaty evening in Choctaw, Oklahoma when the best golfer Ive ever played with told me the key to a great round. He explained, You dont need to hit seventy good shots. You need to hit one good shot seventy times. His point was clear. Invest in the fundamentals until your habits are engines of success.Hustle might move you forward, but it doesnt set you up for sustainable success. Good habits are formed through consistency and repetition, not mindless effort. So play the long game. Ask yourself, If I could wish for any skill I wanted, what would I choose?Th en, practice your way to proficiency. How to Go Pro Get really good at what matters most, even if it means doing less.Hustle leads to burnout (the 1 cause of ultimate failure).Pain is temporary. Quitting lasts forever. - Lance ArmstrongDo you have big goals you long to achieve? The biggest threat to your success is giving up too soon.Thats not just my opinion. In oneresearch study, Dr. Angela Duckworth found that Grit, perseverance and passion for long-term goals, predicted success better than any other predictor. It makes sense. No one who quits a goal achieves it.And in my experience, were exponentially more likely to give up than we are to encounter a truly insurmountable obstacle.Heres why this mattersIf sticking with your goals is a top predictor of success, and quitting logically leads to failure, you need to be careful with strategies that will tempt you to quit.Strategy is a generous way to describe hustle, but the point remains. Hustle leads to burnout. Burnout leads to bail out.How to go pro Dont maximize effort and tempt yourself to quit. Maximize sustainability - a true predictor of success.Hustle forgets the big picture, jeopardizing where youll end up.If you dont know where you are going, any road will get you there. - Lewis CarrollThe Hobbittells the story of 13 dwarves, a wizard, and a hobbit named Bilbo, who set off in search of a lonely mountain fortress. The journey beckons the adventurers into a dense forrest, where they find themselves helplessly lost. With giant, venomous spiders closing in, Bilbo shimmies up a tall tree, pokes his head through the leaves, and spots the Lonely Mountain in the clear evening light. This simple act of pausing gives Bilbo the big picture. Its the difference between wandering lost and marching with aim.Hustle might get you somewhere, but is it where you want to go? Pause to locate the best paths to your destination. How to Go Pro Dont hustle your way into a life you hate. Filter your choices through your values an d your goals. Say No to bad fits.Hustle overlooks the need for systems, which slows growth by constraining capacity.A good system shortens the road to the goal. - Orison Swett MardenIn college, I worked retail, and one day I sold jeans to an entrepreneur whos now making $8 million per year.He told me, Im always experimenting. And when I find something thats worth doing, I create a system and either automate or delegate the task. Then I go do more experiments.Hustlers dont think like my insanely successful friend.Hustlers find something thats working and add it to their daily to-do list.Pros automate or delegate.Pros wonder, Could I pay someone else to schedule my blog posts and social media?Could a knowledge base reduce the number of customer support emails I receive? How to Go Pro Value your time as the engine of your growth. Protect it by creating systems and automating or delegating.Hustle hurts productivity (and quality). We overestimate what we can accomplish in a day and undere stimate what we can accomplish in a year. - Kevin KaiserPeople who are overworked underperform. In factThe Harvard Business Review arguesthat, according to research, people who overwork themselves with long hours dont seem to actually accomplish more than people who work less.To me, thats a massive waste - time spent working without getting anything done.Imagine what you could be doing with that timePerhaps your biggest opportunity cost is rest, which would prepare you for greater productivity tomorrow.Which is better Working 12 hours one day and sleeping at your desk the next day? Or just working 8 hours both days? How to Go Pro You are not a robot. Treat your mind and body with respect by taking time to rest.Hustle reinvents the wheel. Pros build on what works.Dont reinvent the wheel, just realign it. - Anthony J. DAngeloAt the task level, this looks like trying to teach yourself web design instead of using a WordPress theme or hiring someone who knows what theyre doing. At the s tartup level, reinventing the wheel takes the form of chasing after unclear visions instead of investing your time in proven models.A great example of NOT reinventing the wheel? Caviar. No, not the fish eggs The food delivery service.Caviar was founded in 2012 by a team of entrepreneurs who wanted tocompete in the food delivery space. Rather than trying to reinvent the model, they sought to becomea curated Seamless by only working with restaurants that had at least 4 stars on Yelp. This simple realignment of the wheel worked. In 2015, according tothis Caviar review, the company was acquired by Square for arumored $90 million. Not bad for three years work (Heres where to find aCaviar coupon codeif you want to see the service in action.)How to Go Proneuschpfung is awesome, but for entrepreneurs whose primary goal is to start a successful business, dont chase after nebulous ideas when you can reverse engineer something that works.ConclusionImagine an expert consultant telling you, Ive spo tted a bad habit thats hurting your productivity, focus, and efficiency - plus its tempting you to give up.Would you want to make a change?Research and common sense say hustle is one such habit. Is hard work important? Absolutely. Its irreplaceable. But hustle is hard work done stupid.Go pro with the tips from this post.Want to go deeper?Do you have big goals you long to achieve? Shocking survey highlights hair based discrimination in the workplaceShocking survey highlights hair based discrimination in the workplaceIn order to effectively unpack the impact of hair based biases in a professional setting, CROWN conducted a massive research survey of 2,000 American women between the ages of 25 and 64.Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, or the CROWN Coalitionis an organization co-founded by DOVE, that intends to end race-based discrimination in the workplace. Alongside the personal care brand, the coalition is composed of founding members of the National Urban League, Color of Change, and the Western Center on Law and Poverty.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraThis ground-breaking research provides evidence of what we have always knownanecdotally that black women experience discrimination in the workplace due to their natural hair. We are ral lying ur leaders, policy-makers and our communities to engage on this important issue, said Marc Morial, CEO of the National Urban League. The key findingsHairstyles that bear a strong association with the African American community, namely locks, braids, and Bantu knots were consistently ranked the lowest for job readiness. However, when participants were shown pictures of white women and black women, sporting the same hairstyles, white women were found to be 25% more likely to be deemed job-ready than black women, even when the hairstyles were exactly the same.Black professionals were 30% more likely to receive a formal grooming policy in the workplace, at both the application process and the orientation phase. African American women additionally reported being 80% more likely to change their natural hair to accommodate social expectations and norms at work and by and large, women of color reported fearing scrutiny and discrimination when expressing their natural beauty in the work place significantly more than the other respondents. This year the New York City Commission on Human Rights, instituteda law that precludes biases based on hairstyles by employers and schools. The commission said they were motivated by a desire to repudiate the notion that traditional black hairstyles are as a rule hygienic, messy or simply not suited for a professional setting.More recently CROWN and Dove came together to fund The CROWN Act, which recently passed the CaliforniaSenate. The bill aims to ensure traits historically associated with race, such as hair texture and style, will be protectedfrom discrimination in the workplace and in charter/public schools. The bill is on route to be reviewed by the CaliforniaAssembly this year. Esi Eggleston Bracey, who is the Executive Vice President, and chief operating Officer at Doves parent company, is both motivated and disheartened by the results of the recent research study. Braceyexplained,As this research highlights, there is more work to be done, but we are committed to ensuring each and every one of us sees ourselves as beautiful and celebrates our diverse array of shapes, sizes, skin tones, ethnicities, hair textures, and styles and more. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people
